ChatGPT Sponsored Agents: What Marketers Need to Know

Advertising in ChatGPT is moving beyond a sponsored placement. On September 16, OpenAI announced a test of Sponsored Agents: after clicking an ad, a person can choose to ask a business-sponsored agent questions about a product or service before visiting the advertiser’s site.

That changes the job of an ad. A headline may start the interaction, but the answers that follow could determine whether the customer takes the next step. For marketers, the practical question is whether their product information, claims and measurement are ready for that conversation.

What are Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT?

According to OpenAI’s announcement, a user who clicks a relevant ad can start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent. The agent can handle follow-up questions and link to the business’s website. OpenAI says the sponsored conversation is separate from ChatGPT’s independent answers and the user’s original conversation.

Sponsored Agents are being tested with select U.S. advertisers. They are not a broadly available campaign type, and OpenAI has not published enough performance data to claim that the format improves conversion rates.

Why the follow-up question matters

Traditional ads compress a pitch into a few lines. A conversational ad may have to answer the questions that normally come after a click: Does this fit my budget? Is it available near me? What makes it different? What happens if I need to return it?

A furniture retailer, for example, could give dimensions, materials and care instructions. A service business might explain coverage areas, appointment availability and what a first visit includes. Those are useful answers only when the underlying information is accurate and current. A polished conversation built on outdated inventory or vague service terms can create a worse experience than a simple ad.

What else changed in ChatGPT Ads?

The same announcement introduced tools for creating and managing campaigns with natural-language prompts, suggested copy and imagery in Ads Manager, and optional text customization that adapts headlines and descriptions to a conversation. OpenAI also announced integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. These are platform features; marketers should still review generated creative and validate what their campaign reporting actually captures.

How should a business prepare?

  1. Audit the answers customers need. List the five or ten questions that routinely hold up a purchase or lead. Check that product pages, policies and service pages answer them plainly.
  2. Choose a narrow use case. Start with one offer whose pricing, availability, terms and next step can be kept current. A broad catalog is harder to govern.
  3. Set boundaries for claims. Decide which facts an agent can state, where it should link for details and when it should defer to a person. Review examples before launch.
  4. Measure beyond the click. Tag landing links where available, and compare qualified leads or orders with spend. If a platform reports conversations, treat them as engagement until they can be tied to business outcomes.

Should marketers move budget now?

For most businesses, preparation is the immediate move. Sponsored Agents remain a limited test, so a media budget decision needs actual access, pricing, controls and outcome data. Businesses that already have access can run a bounded pilot against an existing acquisition channel, with a defined spend cap and qualified-lead or order measure.

The larger lesson applies even before this ad format becomes widely available: as AI takes a more active role in the buying journey, clear and trustworthy business information becomes part of creative performance.
